Central Coast CX #2

What an amazing day of racing! If you were there, then you are a true EnduroBro for braving the elements to race in what I ultimately considered some of the best and magical dirt to ever appear at a CCCX Race! Afterall, deciding to venture out to race bikes while the population at large is hitting their snooze button and brewing up another pot of coffee while the rain pours down is definitely EnduroBro! In fact, I think the Cat 3 racers were extra gnarly today as they were out there in the brunt of the conditions and morning rain. As afternoon racers, our main challenge was one last storm shower that came through and gave a pretty thorough soaking to, what I believe to be, just about everyone getting warmed up for the 11am race. Soaked gloves, kit, socks and shoes. Good thing chance favors the prepared mind and there were spares and plenty of towels back at the van!

Once that last system moved through, the blue birds came out and sun broke through to make for an amazing day of racing! Keith laid out another super fun course that some said was similar to week one, but in reverse. While that is pretty accurate, there were a few fun deviations… and I cannot thank him enough for letting us shred DOWN the berm trail again! Wow! That single section of swooping corners brought a huge smile to my face every single lap!

I couldn’t be happier for these two EnduroBro’s! Absolute crusher rides netted our favorite Marin Bikes Ambassador and Bobcat Bikes supported Dillon Santos a pair of W’s on the day. I think the tall socks helped…

If this picture doesn’t sum up the attitude of EnduroBro, then I don’t know what does! Get out on your bike and have fun! The friends you race with and family support at the races make for some unforgettable memories! Does it help when you are super fast and routinely stomp out podiums like Big Ed and the Gaucher’s? Yeah, that helps a little!

IMG_1288

Speaking of podiums, there were a ton of “red jersey’s” on course and the DC10 gang climbed their fair share of podiums, with Jett Chandler snagging 2nd place behind brother Santa Cruz Bicycles backed Steffen Anderson rather than last week, when Bear Development rider Soren was out front – Not only that, but more fast twins in the form of the “McHoney Brothers” used their Nestle Chocolate Milk (perfect product pose!) to fuel some podium’s, too! See what I’m talking about – FAST FAMILIES! And on the right, Briar moved up from his Sport class victory and put in a solid top 5 expert run as well!

IMG_1275

The brothers Anderson, with Emily Forsberg who earned honors as the top female racer after a barn burner finish with Bri!

IMG_1296

So stoked on Bri’s ride! And Micah once again proved to be an incredible competitor, as we battled nose-to-tail for the majority of the race, slip sliding around the course and doing sweet skids in the mud! Yes, he totally has the “matchy-matchy” dialed in perfectly with the orange Peninsula Bike Works bling running just as strong off the bike as his on-course antics!

IMG_1282

And I am never quick to forget that if Quadzilla Racing’s Alex Kramer wasn’t racing his BMX bike out there, then I would be getting dominated by him as usual! If it’s any indication by IBIS-Buy-Cell’s fixture in the class, Ceasar, the single speed racers are bad dudes…who aren’t concerned with rain, mud and the ability to still shift!

IMG_1293

Two of the nicest guys and good friends! Mark nailed down a solid 3rd for Family Cycling Center and Rich looked to be having more fun on the last lap than anyone should be allowed!

IMG_1281

This group of guys is the epitome of EnduroBro – no matter which lines are crossed and how the seriousness escalates, even when contemplating the fact that they are heading out on hardtails instead of their normal “fun” bikes, they keep the atmosphere light and fun! Nicky D, Ryan and Dillon are a blast to have at the races!

IMG_1269

Not to be out-done by the fun antics Micah and I have in battling it out on the course, Tracy and Bri looked like boxers in a ring (albeit with fancy nails and hair…) as they raced each other right up until the end in what must have been over 5 passes back and forth on the last lap! The girls are fierce!

A few more podium shots…Dillon winning 19-34 Expert over Kyle and Sergio – fast dudes!

IMG_1295

The men’s pro podium with the top 2…errr, 3, got a little confused with the mirror images of winner Steffen and 3rd place Sorren while Jett holds down 2nd.

IMG_1292

I’m not sure if I snagged the podium girl or Bri snagged the podium boy. So proud of her!

IMG_1283

While Cupertino Bike Shop is the stalwart of our program, I have been itching to ride a hard tail and my good friend and incredible trail ripper and photographer at Bay Bikes in Carmel was able to arrange for me to try out a StumpJumper Expert 29er. Wow, that a fun bike! Anything this fast and comfortable – that encourages you to shred even the downward portions of trail – must be EnduroBro! While I didn’t have a ton of time on the bike, it was enough to convince me that a plastic fantastic XC race weapon is on the looming horizon…

To everyone that braved the foreboding conditions, you are a champ and bada$$ just for showing up! We all won out on getting to roost PERFECT DIRT and a great day of racing!

Tour de Toro!

The 2014 Tour de Toro was an overwhelming success – well if your definition of success includes riding until complete muscle failure and exhaustion render your body utterly useless for at least a few days! Yeah! definitely, I think most people would classify that as admirable and worthy to strive for. Ok…Admittedly, the term “most” in this case might, maybe, potentially, possibly refer to a select group of individuals who could arguably just as easily pass most entry level mental illness tests for admittance into a psychiatric ward. But that’s just splitting hairs…

Seriously Bro’s, after having heard about a ride that climbs over 9,000 feet and rides every sweet trail in Toro Park over the course of the day AND  is then followed up with a BBQ for all survivors..errrr, participants. Who wouldn’t be tossing on some Dumonde Tech and filling their bottles and pockets with nourishment at such a prospect? SO ENDURO BRO! After missing it previously, we resolved to make it a “must attend” in 2014.

Like any sweet event, it’s “off the radar” status only adds to the allure. In this case, the event was not confirmed until a few days prior which only added to the mystique- maybe we will ride ourselves into a tiny ball of goo this weekend and maybe we won’t. When the text came through confirming the nearest date, sheer terror was followed (kind of) with excitement and anticipation. Wild Bill and Mild Sue who run the wildly popular Ashland Mountain Adventures shuttle in Southern Oregon, would orchestrate the inflicting of pain followed by a well deserved gathering for the brave afterwards. With all that said, here are some pictures that managed to get snapped despite cramped hands and dehydrated mental acuity…

Anticipation building with all the finest riders waiting to get through the gate and shred!

The troops are excited to get things started! Note, the clear excess of enthusiasm. Smiles of exultation would be replaced by grimaces of pain…

The first time to the top of 1800 there were smiles, happiness, and high morale. In the morning, 1800 was quickly followed by Black Mountain, which is bigger and steeper than it looks in the background over Froy’s right shoulder. Impressively, Sherwin proved that 26″ wheels are far from dead as he rode past everyone walking up the trail. That was cool!

It’s possible that morale was starting to waiver for some after the second time up 1800, but honestly, have you met, Brett, Kelly, John and Froy? They were talking the game that is needed to forge ahead at this point. Arf!

photo 2 (2)

Who even know’s how many times we have topped out the mountain at this point!?! However, based on the amount of people utilizing the bench, it has certainly been a few times! Young shredders Dillon and Mathew get in a well deserved break after not only shredding every down pointed trail, but also riding at the pointy end of the uphill assaults, too! Well done guys!

photo 1 (3)

Same place. Same time. Different angle. Team IBIS Retro Cellar’s Anthony Medaglia (leaned over, white helmet) was absolutely demolishing the climbs! In much the same way that Sherwin attacked Black Mountain, Anthony proved that 26″ is still formidable by absolutely ripping to the top of the climbs aboard his 160mm, 26″ wheeled, IBIS Mojo HDR. The assortment of bikes was definitely interesting. With plenty of long travel, little wheeled bikes, but also a good amount of 29er’s as well. John Patullo is always fast and his 26″ Stumpjumper was on point. Adam Linder proved that age doesn’t matter aboard his Turner 29er, while Dave and John both rocked Specialized Camber 29ers – John rocking the 110mm travel S-works Camber that he rode to victory at the Santa Cruz Super Enduro a few months earlier and Dave riding the 120mm EVO version. Arts Cyclery own Tom Tom Duran rolled up in a sweet new Sprinter van, unloaded and proceeded to shred his Santa Cruz Tall Boy LTc for the day. One thing that made the day tough on most was the popularity of 1x drivetrains which placed a premium on laying down the power up each steep climb.

photo 4 (2)

Enduro shredders! Muscle Milk Specialized’s John Hauer rocking his S-works Camber and IBIS iconic standout, Jeff Kendall-Weed aboard his new HD3, both still smiling at the last water break. Scratch that, I have never seen JKW NOT smiling! False hope! And seriously, did John really push that enormous front ring up all those climbs? Wow! Oh well, just one more climb. Just one more time! We can do it!

photo 3 (2)

Our fearless leader triumphantly tops out 1800 for the final time – wahoo! Having screws removed from his foot didn’t seem to effect his assault on the brutal day in the least. Maybe it has something to do with that spiffy, new IBIS Ripley he was riding? Looking on in the background, Dave might be contemplating “I wonder how Bill’s foot feels?”. Not to be outdone, Dave is also riding fresh off a “post hardware removal surgery from his foot” as well – ROCK SOLID these two!

photo 1

This bike was instrumental in conquering the day! New IBIS HD3!

photo 2

Not only did we have to contend with leg searing climbs and arm pumping descents, but the unexpected surprise always adds an additional element of fun to the equation, like this massive downed oak consuming the trail. Some went through. Some went around. Did any go over?

photo 3

Last time up top. Earned that final decent for sure! Is there a better bike to get you to the top? No time to contemplate, food is waiting!

Big thanks to Wild Bill and Mild Sue of Ashland Mountain Adventures!!! What a great day! Can’t wait until next year!

Bell Santa Cruz Super Enduro Recap

Wow, if the Bell Santa Cruz Super Enduro wasn’t one of the most fun day’s you have ever had on a mountain bike, then you probably weren’t there. Plenty of quality riding in the forested hills of the Santa Cruz mountains provided a back drop that was definitely worthy of an event finale! With four special stages and some challenging climbing during the transfer sections, this event was going to test riders all the way through until the final skid of the last stage Bro!

For me, the event was especially rad in knowing that Bri was in contention for a top spot on the series podium for the Pro Women. Dang girl, nice work this season! In preparation for the event, I was extra cautious in preparing her goggles so that she would have maximum #EnduroGirlGogglePower…but I guess I should have spent some time on her glasses, as she tossed her goggles aside in favor of her favorite Smith PivLock V2’s…oh well. At least I oiled her chain…I think.

At the end of the day, she had a Shripping good time and landed on a talent laden podium shared with Olympian in Lea Davison, badass mammer jammer DH’er Jo G-Form Petterson and her best friend InsAmy. I was super proud that she rose to the occasion, pedaled her butt off and laid down clean runs to not only throw down the great result on the day, but also cement her 2nd place overall in the series standings. Wow! At the start of the year we could barely spell #EnderoBrow! Mad props for a great performance and hopefully a glimpse of more goodness to come!

Santa Cruz Super Enduro Pro Podium

Santa Cruz Super Enduro Pro Women Podium

My day was almost over before it began. After a SNAFU on Tuesday night left me with a colorful and swollen ankle I was pretty sure that riding would be out of the question since walking to the bathroom proved nearly impossible. Thanks to the help of Grifall Family Chiropractic, Oona Hall at Accupuncture Monterey Bay, some clever insights from Super Coach, Chris Burnham, and Steve Lewis for helping to dial in my bike and more supportive HT DH Pedal / 5Ten Maltese Falcon shoe combo. I don’t remember exactly what my contribution (beyond stupidity) was, but I’m SURE that I cleaned my own goggles, Bro. Ultimately, I was able to clip in and make it around the course in a fashion that salvaged what was looking like a sure DNS (did not start) and resulted in a 5th for the day and preserving my 2nd place standing in the series.

On a day when I couldn’t be more excited for my #EnduroPrincess to rise to the occasion, it was also incredible to see how our friends pulled through to throw down some awesomeness of their own! I’m sure I won’t get them all, but these #EnduroBro’s were stellar as well…

Dillon Santos straight flowed the day with 2 of 3 test win’s for the day and the overall series wins!

photo 3

Dillon Sent it all the way to the top of the box for the day and series!

Amy Morrison was also on the Shripping train with a 3rd on the day and series.

Steven Lewis made the long trek from the “round 1 home” of Reno, NV to put in a performance to secure his #2 series ranking.

Ann Fitzsimmons thought the event would be good rehab for her still recovering knee, so she threw down just enough to win the Cat 1 women!

Nick Dinapoli had us all in tears with his lyrical mastery that was only bettered by his first place on the day and series as well!

Jordan Hartman was just behind Nick for #2 in the series after overcoming some serious challenges this year.

Emily Forsberg stamped the day and the series, winning the Sport Women class – a sign of good things to come in the sport from this young woman!

Bailey Smith who routinely shares accolades with Scott Chapin for the “best dressed at the races” brought home a solid 3rd in the series after two other wins.

The battle of the pro men continues to be intense within the Santa Cruz Mountains as Muscle Milk Specialized’s John Hauer makes it two in a row after another close battle with IBIS Retro Cellar’s Jeff Kendall-Weed separated by a scant 3 seconds! Jeff claimed 2 stage win’s while John captured the win in the challenging 3rd stage. Will 3 in a row be on the menu for next year or 3 seconds be found on the trails? Can’t wait to find out!

The Funniest Podium Ever? By far!

Dang, there are probably a ton more incredible stories to recount, but at the moment this will have to suffice. Thanks for the incredible memories California Enduro Series! All of the #EnduroBro’s are already excitedly looking to 2015!
