Thank you Marin!

To my Marin Family – a heartfelt thank you for the last 3 years of fun! It has been a truly incredible experience to be a part of your team and a journey that I will not soon forget. I can’t thank you enough for all of the generous support you provided – and staying committed to me during the good times and tough ones too.

From the first time I got on the Attack Trail in Santa Cruz, I knew that bike was something special. It helped improve my confidence knowing that as long as I was in the right position, the bike would get me down just about anything! In addition to helping me grow as a rider, it took me to many podiums in several states and lots of unforgettable adventures. As we turn the page going forward, I will always value the friendships made along the way.

Thank you so much for the support!

Cheers to new adventures!

CES #7 – Kamikaze Bike Games

This last weekend was the Kamikaze Bike Games at Mammoth Mountain for the California Enduro Series second to last round.

I was excited for this race for a few reasons. First it’s my FAVORITE mountain to ride, the dirt is loose kitty litter and it’s SO much fun! Second, my family comes to this race every year so it’s like a mini family vacay and third, I get to race my attack trail!! 🙂

This trip we had my mom, my superstar dad, Brian, DudeDogDillon and Jeff Evans in the condo with us. My mom laughed at how many supplements and healthy concoctions us health nuts had in the condo.

Thursday we got up to pre ride nice and early and Brian and I had a plan to get in as many runs as we could. I also knew that I had to tackle the fast line on the…dun, dun, dun…”HEART OF DARKNESS” which is on Bullet. I watched a couple of my friends do it when we were up practicing a couple weeks before and knew it was next on my list. We warmed up on flow trail and DC10, which is my favorite trail out there and a new stage for this year. We also did a couple of runs on the Kamikaze, shock treatment run which is another super fun trail.

I knew it was time to hit the Heart of Darkness, Brian did a good job of prepping me and having me practice leaning back and looking ahead. So I decided I felt more comfortable following him into to it vs. stopping and looking, so I followed him and I screamed as I made it down the first drop and out of the other rocks in the heart of darkness!! I was so proud of myself! Conquering my fears is something that feels so good! Brian asked me if I wanted to walk back up and do it again, I said NO! HA! The reason it’s so tricky is because you do the first drop in but then you have to avoid a bunch of rocks and trees when you get in there. The picture below really doesn’t give it any justice! Believe me, there are a lot of crashes and injuries in the darkness there!

The Heart of Darkness – The photo doesn’t do it justice! lol

We went up and did the run again from the top, this time when I went into the heart of darkness, I had a little too much speed, I made the first drop, but I got out of control in the middle of the darkness and I thought I was going to ride it out until…I didn’t. I crashed super hard and landed ass-cheek to rock and I just laid there attached to the bike. I made sure to yell that I was ok, but Brian was already running up to me. I just had to lay there for a few minutes as my booty was sore AF!!! I was super frustrated as I had just made it the run before. I decided it was better to run a slow line fast, than a fast line slow (or crashing) so I had Brian walk my bike up so I could ride the other line that I know well. He watched me go through and told me I rode that faster than the other line I was so determined to do….well shit!

I didn’t want to stop riding, so we did a couple more runs for the day before we called it good. I went to the upper rock garden on DC 10 and was super bummed to see that they taped off the line that us girls found a couple weeks before so I decided to tackle that another day since I wasn’t feeling tip top from the crash. Brian and I did about 8 laps while my dad and Dillon rode all day! My dad just loves riding lifts with us, I guess he is one of us now. We almost talked him into racing…but not this time.

Scoping out lines with the boy!

Friday I decided to hit the mountain with my awesome friend Alexandra for a girls only day. We did a few warm up laps on the Kamikaze run before we hit the DC 10 rock garden, we were going to tackle this today! I was really sore from my crash, but luckily Alexandra is a soon to be Chiro, so she kindly worked on my every day (and everyone else too!). At this point my back didn’t hurt too bad, it was mostly super sore and tight. So we went over to the DC10 rock garden and decided to look at it first. We saw Anneke Beerten checking it out, she took the new line that I saw too, so Alexandra and I followed. We decided to do the run again to put it in our memories. Then I took Alexandra over to Bullet to show her my line through the Heart of Darkness since she had an issue on the line I did as well. So we nailed the practice run and I decided to call it good so I could ice my back.

We went to go to the rider’s meeting and ran into Micayla Gatto who we chatted with and ended up inviting her over to the condo for dinner. The boys and girls were so excited, we had to play her, “Ferda Girls” video so my parents could see it. It was pretty funny she was singing it in person while we watched. Needless to say we had a lot of people over for dinner in the condo that night. I asked Ninja Brian to bring his massager to the condo for me, but somehow, Micayla was the one getting a massage not me!! HA!

Ninja Brian’s special massage tool got some love!

I decided to take off Saturday because my back was getting worse, I was taking any herbs and spices that the boys would give me for my back, turmeric, these special indian leaves, quit your bitchin stick and many more. I would also go from the ice cold pool to the hot tub back and forth over and over. I was pretty worried about race day because I couldn’t bend over and could barely squat. We realized we hadn’t seen my dad in hours so we called to make sure he was ok, he answered and said he was just having so much fun on the mountain! I guess we have a park rat on our hands!

Thanks to Brian my attack trail was super dialed and now had my “Ferda Girls” sticker on her. She was ready to race!

Race day came and I was feeling off, I was nervous because I like to do well here, but I was bummed because my back was hurting. I knew that climbing was going to be a challenge since I hadn’t pedaled at all since Thursday, I was just taking the lifts.

We started the day off with DC10 as our first stage, I knew I had to pedal as much as possible in the beginning of the stage, because the rest was just going downhill on the single track. I felt good, I nailed the first rock garden and just reminded myself to keep it upright in some of the deep, loose corners. I made it down with out crashing and I was smiling ear to ear! The next stage was my second favorite stage, so I headed up to stage 2.

Stage 2 is the Kamikaze to Shock Treatment stage which has a TON of pedaling! I was hoping my lady hips would help me keep my momentum up on the fast fire road and I could get some time on the ladies. I knew I just needed to keep it upright on shock treatment as you can get buck wild in some of the turns and it is easy to get out of control. I came around a turn in a blind corner right into a steep rock chute and there was a huge boulder in the middle of the line I take, it scared the crap out of me because I came into that turn super hot. I managed to make it through and pedaled my buns out. When I was on Whitebark I could see Zephyr ahead with Lauren right in front of her. I kept pedaling and tried to go as smooth as possible through Richter because I had some fast straight lines through the middle of the trail. I got to the last wood berm to the finish and was so close to the girls, I almost caught them. I was really happy with my finish on that stage. I couldn’t breath, I pushed so hard to try and catch them!

Next we took the lift up to the stage 3, which is Flow. Tasha was lined up in front of me and she told me to let her know if I needed to pass, I told her I wasn’t going to need to pass her. We are very closely matched when it comes to racing this type of terrain, she rocks the DH sections and I have a little more in the pedal sections than she does. So since the segments are pretty half and half, we end up battling it out, but in a good way! She is a total badass and one of the nicest people you will ever meet, so we have a blast together! I pedaled off the start across Brake through again, it seemed so much slower than the first time! I then made my way across to the fast rocky downhill section and I saw Tasha, she couldn’t keep the bike upright at the bottom, so I made a note to myself to slowdown so I didn’t make the same mistake. As I kept pedaling down the hill I could see her dust, so I kept pedaling down Smooth Operator hitting all the lines I practiced. As I went off the last step up, I could see Tasha right ahead of me so I went to put in a hard effort standing up and I almost ate shit! I could hear everyone say, “whoa” but thankfully I made it to the finish where I just fell off the bike to the ground because I couldn’t breath again!! I was done! Thanks to Micayla, she was running Pinkbike’s instagram and got the whole thing on video. LOL

Thanks Micalya! LOL

We had to pedal from Canyon Lodge to the Main Lodge for this next segment, I had to stop a few times and stretch out my back because it was super tight. I got to lift and this time we headed back up to the top of the mountain for the longest stage of the day. Again, Tasha lined up in front of me and told me to holler if she was in my way. So we started and the fun thing about this stage is that you can see way ahead on the segment so I just kept pedaling ahead looking for miss Tasha! When we hit the cross over trail Lincoln Express, I was dying, I felt so slow through all the corners before and was tired of pedaling, lol, but then I saw Tasha just a corner ahead. I thought, oh shit…I either need to get in front of her a good distance before we hit the downhill or I’m screwed, I knew If I didn’t have enough time she would fly through the technical section on Follow me because she knows it well and I would have to try and get out of her way. So I just kept pedaling, I was getting closer and was right on her wheel as we dropped into follow me, I hollered at her so she could hear me hoping that she would pin it, which she did but not because she heard me but because she knows the trail well. 🙂 I stayed pretty close to her until I got buck wild and was heading straight into a tree, I had to skid to a stop and get positioned back on the trail. We both finished laughing and happy again!

Her and I kept battling it out stage after stage, I was ahead by a few seconds after the first stage, then after stage two she was ahead, after three and 4 I was only ahead by 5 seconds. The last stage is Bullet and I was like, ah shit Tasha…Bullet is your favorite stage, I’m screwed!! LOL

So we took a little break before we went up to the last stage and we headed up. When we got to the top I saw there were some pro men up there, so I told her I was just going to go before they went because I wanted to be done with the day as I was super sore. So I went, and I nailed all of the sections I had practiced and I felt good all the way down the hill, I got to the bottom and was excited to see my parents waiting for me! It was a bit before Tasha came down, I was like where the heck is she….well she broke her crank and pedal off in the Heart of Darkness (I don’t just make up these scary names, there are reasons for them!!) and she rode the rest of the stage on one pedal!! She is my hero!! She is such a badass, she rode the elevator shaft down with one pedal! I would have died!!

I ended up beating her, but not without a battle!! I finished 6th for the day, I was stoked. I made it through without any crashes and was just off the podium. Overall it was a great weekend, lots of bikes, friends, food and fun!! I’m already excited for next year at Mammoth!

Huge shout out to Matt Guntert for all the local hookups for the weekend! Not only did he take us around the mountain, he hooked up my dad with a full face helmet for his week of fun! Also, shout out to Megan and Steve for all of their hard work putting together this series!

Mammoth Mountain | Kamikaze bike games pre race fun!!

This last weekend we had a truck full of 5 people, bikes and gear for 3 incredible days at Mammoth Mountain. The crew this weekend was myself, Maddie, Alexandra, Soda, Brian, Rick and Zach. We then had some additions that didn’t stay with us, but came to shred, SeanSolo who left his house at 2am rode all day and then drove back home and got there at 11:30pm!!! Essence and Nathan joined us for two days of fun as well as Jesse aka Endurobro!

We started off day one by doing a warm up on velocity….might not have been the best warm up run! LOL. We then met up with locals Matt Guntert and Gabe Taylor who gave us a preview of the new race course for this year. Some of the trails are the same awesome ones we have ridden in the past, but there are two new kickass stages that are going to be so rowdy!!!

We all scoped out lines on the rock garden on DC10 for a bit, that one is tricky for sure!! It’s super steep and rocky and you either have the chunky right line or the sketch left line with a drop at the end. The trick on that one is that the Mammoth kitty litter is so deep you can’t really control where you want to go! None of us ladies tried it, we all looked at it too long so we decided to come back to it the next day. We then did a lady train the rest of the way down DC10, it was awesome!

We also rode the snow pile that I was eyeing every time we went up the gondola. That shit was slicker than it looks, we were all dying laughing as we slid down the slab! I learned that Jesse is so much fun to ride with, he is so funny and animated it just makes the experience that much more entertaining!

It was Alexandra’s birthday on Saturday, little did she know that we contacted her parents to see what her favorite bday cake was. Maddie and I worked on this triple chocolate Kahlua cake all afternoon…we had lots of technical difficulties to say the least. LOL but she was super surprised, which was the plan!!! 🙂

Day 2 we shredded more on every trail and just had way too much fun! We decided to go over to DC10 to try the rock garden. I scoped out a new line that wasn’t there the day before and I pointed it out to the girls. Essence was the first to try it and she totally nailed it!! So Alexandra went next and she nailed it as well. I thought…well shit…I guess I have to try it now too. It was super sketch and I didn’t really hit the line I wanted on the drop, but I made it anyway!! It was so awesome cheering each other on! Soda screamed louder than I did when I went off the drop, it was pretty funny!

On our last run, all of the boys and girls went together on Bullet to scope out some lines. It was probably the most fun run of the day as the guys showed us the lines and all of us ladies followed, the cheering from everyone was INCREDIBLE!!! We are so lucky to have such awesome friends!

After we were done shredding we headed over to the infamous Wild Willey’s hot springs. There were more people than I have ever seen out there before! It was fun to take everyone out there since it’s a fun tourist spot to go. After that all of the ladies did some Arbonne face masks, we even got Brian to play too!! We looked like Oompa Loompas!

On Monday, it was our last day, we all headed to the top of the Gondola and ended up taking off in two different directions. Alexandra and I ended up shredding as many laps, laps, laps that we could. I had a couple of silly crashes that had my laughing hysterically, Alexandra was probably wondering what the heck was wrong with me. LOL

We then tired to ride the snow bank again which was a total failure!!!

The drive home was one of the fastest ever since we were on such a high from the fun weekend we were just telling stories and laughing the whole way! Rick and Brian said that one of the most fun parts of the weekend was watching us girls tackle the gnar sections and nail them! We thought so too!!! I can’t wait for the Kamikaze games next weekend, it’s going to be another epic week!! If you haven’t registered yet, you definitely should!

CES #4 – China Peak

This last weekend was the first stop of the California Enduro Series Golden Tour at China Peak resort. I camped in our usual spot along the river with my partner in crime, Brian Astell (aka Trail Works Brian, aka TW Brian), for the weekend and it was the perfect spot. We had a little wading pool all to ourselves in the freezing cold river which came in handy race day for sure!

I was pretty excited for this race, because I usually do well in the technical courses vs the more pedally courses and this one is one of the more rocky ones. I didn’t race this race last year because of mono, so I wanted to get a run in on all of the stages to refresh my memory from 2 years ago.

I was all decked out in GForm this weekend! So glad I had it on!

Stages 1,2,3 and 4 were the same this year and they added an additional stage 5 which was super rowdy! I decided to practice the course in order so we hit the first stage and boy was I surprised at all of the water on the course! The top section was a full-on mud bog and I wasn’t happy to get my bike dirty right off the bat! LOL! Stage 1 and 2 were pretty easy, straight forward stages without anything super technical. Stage three is one of the longest and starts off with some fun rock sections, a ton of pedaling, and then a rock garden before you pedal through the trees and creek crossings to the finish line. Stage 4 is the stage that you get to race on the rock slabs down the hill and it’s one of my favorite stages! Last but not least, Stage 5 was brand new this year and it was SO MUCH FUN! It’s exactly what I love to ride, steep, loose, rocky downhill section up top and then pretty pedally and fun to the end of the stage.

TW Brian and I going up the lift to get our Pre-ride on!

The first time I went down stage 5 I wasn’t sure what to expect, there were a couple of fun rock drops, off camber slabs and loose, deep corners that were SO STEEP! I crashed a couple of times on the first time down, but I didn’t get hurt because it was so soft. I learned I probably should have kept my speed up instead of going slow checking out the course, because that’s what made me crash…not enough speed.

After I re-fueled and TW Brian replaced my brake with his carbon brake I decided I wanted to run stage 5 one more time at a faster pace. Well to say it was a disaster is an understatement! I crashed so many times because there were so many people stopped all the way down the course and it had gotten so destroyed by so many people pre-riding it! I smashed TW Brian’s carbon brake on the rocks and felt so bad that I broke it!! OOPS! I decided it was time to call it a day.

We had a great spaghetti dinner and cooled down in the river before we watched Dillon’s gopro of the courses just before we headed to bed. I slept like crap that night, maybe it was because of Dillon’s derrièr, or it could have been the fact that I had hit the ground pretty hard and hurt all over!! UGH!

I woke up race day and did my morning routine with breakfast, yoga stretching and breathing and then got ready to go! For the first transfer we had to climb up to the top of Stage 3 which took about an hour, it was pretty warm and we got to the top just as the pro women were getting ready to take off. I usually like to get up there a little faster, but the climb was slower this year with all the soft dirt.

Stage 3 (our first race stage) was a complete disaster! I started off going off course through some rocks and couldn’t get clipped in and back on course, I should have gotten off the bike and ran it would have been so much faster! I tried to compose myself and to focus on staying up right the rest of the stage so I kept pedaling knowing I had to go through the technical rock garden. Caro caught me just before we went through the rocks (this girl can pedal, just in case you wanted to know!) so I tried to stay with her through the rocks, which I rode perfect, but then disaster struck again….my front tire fell off a wet bridge and my front wheel fell in the hole and over the bars I went. It happened so fast that I was still clipped in and pinned under the bike. I was stuck, I couldn’t move at all….luckily there was someone there who was able to help me get unstuck. When I finally got up, my bars were rotated and I had to get them straight again. It was awful, I was pretty much down almost 2 minutes after the first stage of the day.

Next we got to take the lift up to Stage 1. Remember that mud bog I talked about….well it was WAY MUDDIER on race day! I thought it might dry out a little bit, but oh no!! This girl got stuck in the mud and had to hobble through the muddy forest. HA! I finally got through the stage without too many mistakes after that. I should have done what Caro did,  her cyclocross skills kicked in and she hopped off and ran through the whole section!

On to Stage 2, it was just a short transfer up to the top of the stage. I tried to keep myself focused and look ahead through the stage so I didn’t have any more crashes. I managed…slowly but surely I got down. I felt so off, I just didn’t have the lungs or the legs and it was pretty frustrating. Once I got to the bottom, they said they weren’t opening the next stage for 2 hours (we had to climb up which would take about an hour) so I knew I had to cool myself down.

I went to the river and sat in it to cool my feet and head because it was so warm, I was struggling a lot. I got some food and ice for my water and headed up to Stage 4. We had to climb up to 4, so Lily and I stopped in the creek halfway up to keep cool. I was dying in the heat! I knew I had to just keep climbing or I wasn’t going to make it to the top. We had to wait in line quite a bit for this stage and it was open and exposed so I don’t think that helped me out at all. Stage 4 is one of my favorite stages, but for some reason I was so tired I could barely make it to the bottom of the stage. I was struggling to hold on to the bike and just tried to keep pedaling. I didn’t crash, but I was so done after this stage.

I went to go get my chest pad on for the last stage and I had a meltdown. I was so tired, my shock wasn’t holding air and I felt like crap. I started crying and Andrew Cavaletto and Ron DiNapoli were so nice and helped me fix my bike, they told me I had this and that I just had one more stage. I was seriously thinking about calling it a day because I knew that Stage 5 was the gnarliest and I didn’t want to get hurt. I missed almost the whole season last year and I couldn’t afford a broken bone to take me out. I wasn’t confident in being able to get down the stage clean because I was so tired. Anyone that knows me, knows that this pathetic, meltdown, crying Bri is not me.

I pulled my shit together, with the help of a pep talk from TW Brian and got on the lift to 5. I took some deep breaths and calmed myself down, I asked for a little help from the man above and decided that I would just walk the upper section of 5 since the trip up the lift I was watching several people crashing super hard just below me. It wasn’t worth it. So I did just that, when I got to the super steep stuff, I just hopped off my bike and ran, I can say I was proud of myself for making that decision instead of trying to ride it so I didn’t look stupid….I would rather look stupid than be hurt. I made it through the technical section and pedaled as much as I could to get to the finish, not before I took a hard spill off a small rock drop. It was SO STUPID! The dirt just took my front tire and I went down hard. I got back up and finished.

I was so thankful to be done. I finished without quitting and for the most part wasn’t injured too bad, just a little bruised and battered. I ended up 8th place for the day. When I got to my van to get ready to leave, I had a flat tire. UNBELIEVABLE!!! I just started crying and TW Brian came to my rescue, again!!! He and Ron were able to get my tire off and put the spare on after some quick thinking on tools since I couldn’t find all of mine. DOH!

After my tire was fixed, TW Brian and I caravaned to Reno. It was the longest 6 hour drive, I think we got there just after midnight. We woke up and decided to head to the lake with the paddleboard and kayaks with my dad, sister, brother-in-law and nephew. It was a blast, we ended up in the water for hours swimming and paddling, it was just what I needed for my legs. They were pretty messed up, I could barely walk they hurt so bad!

The next day we headed up to Northstar with Zach Waymire. TW Brian  had never ridden up there, so we took him down Livewire to warm up. It was pretty fun, I forget how fun those jumps are all the way down! We did a few more laps down it before I lost my phone and we had to turn on Find my iPhone as we followed it all around the mountain. Luckily someone grabbed it and headed to lost and found….we weren’t so sure if they were taking off with it or not since it kept traveling down the mountain. LOL

Overall it was a good weekend. I was pretty excited to get home Tuesday so I could just take a long nap!!! I was exhausted from the whole trip, but super glad to see my family for a few days!

Next race is the CES at Big Bear down south, should be pretty fun. I haven’t raced down there since Butler and I used to race the XC races down there with Tom from the Big Bear series! I’m hoping that Butler will be able to join me on this one! Fingers crossed!
